Destination Guide

Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater jewel in the Great Rift Valley, a lush oasis surrounded by fever trees, papyrus beds, and flower farms at 1,884 metres above sea level.

Unlike Kenya's alkaline Rift Valley lakes, Naivasha's fresh water supports a thriving ecosystem of hippos, fish eagles, and over 400 bird species. The lake's shores are dotted with elegant lodges and the historic homes of Kenya's early settlers — Joy Adamson of Born Free fame lived on its banks. Crescent Island, a volcanic crater rim rising from the lake, offers one of Kenya's finest walking safaris among giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest with no predators and no fences.

When to Visit

Best Time to Visit

Lake Naivasha is accessible year-round. The dry months of January to March and June to October offer the most pleasant weather and best birdwatching. Weekends can be busy with Nairobi residents. Hell's Gate National Park, just south of the lake, is ideal for cycling and hiking in any season.

Wildlife

What You'll See

Lake Naivasha is famous for its hippo population — boat rides at dusk bring you within metres of these enormous animals. African fish eagles are abundant, and the papyrus swamps shelter herons, kingfishers, and jacanas. Crescent Island provides a unique predator-free walking safari with giraffe, zebra, gnu, waterbuck, and eland. Nearby Hell's Gate National Park adds buffalo, baboon, rock-climbing klipspringer, and over 100 raptor species nesting in the volcanic cliffs.

Travel

Getting There

Lake Naivasha is just 90 kilometres northwest of Nairobi — roughly 1.5 hours by road along the scenic Rift Valley escarpment. This makes it the closest Rift Valley destination to the capital and an easy day trip or overnight stop. It combines naturally with Lake Nakuru, Hell's Gate, and the Masai Mara for a Rift Valley–savanna circuit.

Where to Go in Lake Naivasha

01

Crescent Island

Walk among giraffes with no fences — Out of Africa filming location

A private wildlife sanctuary on a volcanic crater rim rising from Lake Naivasha, Crescent Island is one of Kenya's most unusual safari experiences. Because there are no predators on the island, visitors walk freely among giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, waterbuck, and eland — an entirely fence-free, guide-accompanied walking safari. The island was made famous as a filming location for Out of Africa (1985). Reached by a short boat ride from the lakeshore, Crescent Island offers a gentle, intimate alternative to the vehicle-based safaris of the big parks.

02

Hell's Gate National Park

Cycling safari through volcanic gorges — Kenya's most active national park

One of only two national parks in Kenya where you can walk or cycle, Hell's Gate is a dramatic landscape of towering volcanic cliffs, gorges, and geothermal steam vents. The park's Fischer's Tower and Central Tower — eroded volcanic plugs rising from the valley floor — are iconic Rift Valley landmarks and popular rock-climbing sites. The narrow Lower Gorge, carved by ancient water flows through layers of volcanic rock, is a spectacular walk through a slot canyon with natural hot springs. Buffalo, giraffe, zebra, baboon, and over 100 raptor species inhabit the park.

03

Elsamere Conservation Centre

Born Free heritage — afternoon tea with hippos on the Adamson estate

The former home of Joy and George Adamson, the conservationists who raised the lioness Elsa and wrote Born Free, Elsamere sits on the southern shore of Lake Naivasha among ancient fever trees. Now a conservation centre and museum, it houses the Adamsons' original artworks, photographs, and personal effects. The grounds are home to resident hippos, colobus monkeys, and a profusion of waterbirds. Afternoon tea on the lawn — with hippos grazing metres away — is one of Lake Naivasha's most charming traditions.

04

Lake Naivasha Boat Safari

Hippo pods at arm's length — sunset boat rides through papyrus channels

The lake itself is the main attraction, and the classic way to experience it is by boat. Early morning or late afternoon boat safaris navigate the papyrus-fringed shoreline, passing pods of hippos, African fish eagles perched in dead trees, and a stunning variety of waterbirds — herons, cormorants, jacanas, pelicans, and kingfishers. The lake's water level fluctuates seasonally, exposing mudflats that attract waders and creating shifting channels through the papyrus. Sunset on the lake, with the Rift Valley escarpment glowing amber behind you, is one of Kenya's great moments.
