Amboseli

Amboseli National Park sits at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak.

The park is famous for its large herds of free-ranging elephants and the iconic postcard view of elephants silhouetted against the snow-capped Kilimanjaro. At 392 square kilometres, Amboseli is relatively compact but incredibly rich in wildlife. The park's ecosystem is fed by underground springs from Kilimanjaro's melting snow, creating lush swamplands that attract diverse birdlife and large mammals year-round.

Areas & Conservancies

Where to Go in Amboseli

01

Observation Hill

The iconic Kilimanjaro viewpoint — one of the few walk-out spots in the park

The iconic viewpoint at the heart of Amboseli National Park, Observation Hill is a low rocky outcrop that offers the definitive panorama: a sweeping vista of the park's marshlands, dry lake bed, and — on clear days — the towering snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro rising behind herds of elephants. Accessible by a short walking trail (one of the few places you can leave your vehicle inside Amboseli), it is the single best photography spot in the park, particularly at sunrise when the mountain is cloud-free.

02

Kimana Sanctuary

Night drives permitted — wildlife corridor linking Amboseli to Tsavo

A community-owned conservancy on Amboseli's eastern boundary, Kimana (also called KWS Kimana) provides a vital wildlife corridor connecting Amboseli to Tsavo West and the Chyulu Hills. The sanctuary is significantly less visited than the main park but supports large elephant herds, lion prides, and prolific birdlife around its seasonal swamp. Night drives and bush walks are permitted — activities unavailable inside Amboseli itself. Community guides from the Kimana Group Ranch add local expertise and cultural depth.

03

Ol Tukai & the Central Swamps

Permanent swamps with 50+ year elephant research — the park's wildlife engine

The heart of Amboseli's wildlife action, the Ol Tukai area centres on permanent swamps fed by underground meltwater from Kilimanjaro's glaciers. These swamps — Enkongo Narok and Longinye — are the park's lifeline, attracting huge concentrations of elephant, buffalo, hippo, and over 370 resident bird species. The surrounding palm groves and yellow-barked acacia forest create Amboseli's most photogenic habitat. Ol Tukai is where the famous Amboseli elephant research project has tracked individual elephants since 1972.

04

Selenkay Conservancy

Single-camp exclusivity with walking safaris on Maasai-owned land

A 15,000-acre Maasai-owned conservancy north of Amboseli, Selenkay offers a genuine alternative to the crowded main park. With only a single luxury camp, it provides complete exclusivity while supporting Maasai pastoralist communities directly. The conservancy is rich in general game — zebra, giraffe, gerenuk, lesser kudu — and serves as a corridor for elephants moving between Amboseli and the Maasai steppe. Walking safaris, night drives, and Maasai cultural visits are core activities.
