About Tortilis Camp

An award-winning luxury tented camp in a private conservancy bordering Amboseli National Park, offering uninterrupted Kilimanjaro views and intimate wildlife encounters.

Named after the flat-topped Acacia tortilis trees that define the Amboseli landscape, Tortilis Camp is a refined and intimate luxury property set within its own 30,000-acre private conservancy bordering the southeastern boundary of Amboseli National Park. The camp commands what many consider the finest views of Mount Kilimanjaro in all of Kenya — an unbroken panorama of Africa's highest peak rising dramatically above the arid plains, with herds of elephants silhouetted against the mountain at sunrise. The camp's 17 tents are individually sited for maximum privacy, each with spacious interiors featuring handcrafted furniture, four-poster beds draped in mosquito netting, and en-suite bathrooms with safari-style bucket showers and flushing toilets. The family tent is one of the most thoughtfully designed in Kenya, with interconnecting rooms and a dedicated veranda. A private house, Tortilis House, is available for exclusive use with its own chef and guide. Being in a private conservancy allows Tortilis Camp to offer experiences unavailable inside the national park itself: guided bush walks with Maasai warriors through ancient elephant corridors, night game drives that reveal the park's nocturnal residents, and off-road driving for unparalleled wildlife photography. The camp is a champion of community conservation, working closely with local Maasai landowners who have set aside their grazing lands as a wildlife corridor. This partnership has become a model for community-based conservation across Kenya.

Wildlife

Amboseli's elephant herds are among the most studied in Africa, and Tortilis Camp's conservancy serves as a critical corridor for these iconic animals. Lion, cheetah, spotted hyena, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, and buffalo roam the plains, while the swamps attract hippo, waterbuck, and over 400 bird species including African fish eagle, saddle-billed stork, and grey crowned crane. Nocturnal species such as aardvark, porcupine, and African wildcat are spotted on night drives.

Best Time to Visit

June to October delivers the clearest Kilimanjaro views and the best dry-season game viewing, with elephants concentrated around the swamps. January and February are also excellent with warm weather and calving season. November to December offers short rains that green the landscape and bring migratory birds. March to May can be wet, but the dramatic cloud formations over Kilimanjaro are spectacular.
