Health & Vaccines

Health Entry Requirements

What is required, what is recommended, and where to get vaccinated before your trip.

Yellow Fever Vaccination

Required (conditionally)

Required if arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic country (most of Sub-Saharan Africa, parts of South America including Brazil, Colombia, Peru). Direct flights from Europe, North America, or Asia are exempt.

Where to Get It

Any travel clinic or yellow fever vaccination centre. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel. The certificate is valid for life.

Malaria Prophylaxis

Strongly Recommended

Kenya is a malaria zone, particularly in coastal areas, Lake Victoria region, and lowland game reserves (Mara, Tsavo, Amboseli). Nairobi and highland areas above 2,500m are low-risk.

Where to Get It

Prescribed by travel clinic 4-6 weeks before departure. Common options: Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil), Doxycycline, or Mefloquine. Discuss side effects with your doctor.

Routine Vaccinations

Recommended

Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus booster (if not updated in last 10 years) are strongly advised by WHO for Kenya travel. Hepatitis B recommended for longer stays or healthcare workers.

Where to Get It

Your GP or travel health clinic. Most routine vaccines are single-dose and provide long-term protection. Book at least 4 weeks ahead.

COVID-19

No Requirement

As of 2026, Kenya has no COVID-19 vaccination or testing requirements for entry. All pandemic-era restrictions have been fully lifted. No quarantine, no PCR tests, no vaccine certificates needed.

Where to Get It

N/A — no documentation required for entry.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a visa on arrival in Kenya?

No. Kenya discontinued visa-on-arrival in January 2024 when the eTA system launched. All travellers (except exempt categories) must apply for and receive an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation before departing. Airlines will check your eTA status at check-in.

How long can I stay in Kenya with an eTA?

Up to 90 days per entry. The eTA itself is valid for 90 days from the date of issue and allows multiple entries within that period. If you need to stay longer, apply for a permit extension at the Department of Immigration Services in Nairobi before your authorised stay expires.

Do I need a yellow fever vaccine for Kenya?

Only if you are arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic country (most of Sub-Saharan Africa, parts of South America). If you are flying direct from Europe, North America, or Asia with no stops in endemic countries, no yellow fever certificate is required.

How much does the Kenya eTA cost?

$30 per application for adults. Children under 16 are free when included on a parent's application. The fee is non-refundable, even if rejected. Only apply through the official portal at etakenya.go.ke — third-party sites charge significantly more for the same service.
